Hello My name is Tever. I am a native Houstonian. While attending high school I participated in volleyball, basketball, tennis and golf. I entered the dental field at the age of 25. In 2009 I became a product of the recession. This event prompted me to become a full time college student. Twenty years after entering the dental field, I have made great strides toward completing my dream of receiving my Registered Dental Hygienist License. I am developing this portfolio in order to display all the great opportunities that have come my way while being a student at The Lamar Institute of Technology Dental Hygiene Program.
Areas of Competency These are the areas of competency that I have learned while I was a student at Lamar Institute of Technology. These competencies will help me throughout my career as a dental hygienist.
1. Core Competencies I will demonstrate the highest level of care, ethics , experience, and knowledge while treating my patients. I will continue to grow in my knowledge of the dental hygiene field. The knowledge I obtain from Lamar Institute of Technology will help me provide adequate dental hygiene care for my patients.
2.Health Promotion and Disease Prevention The education I am receiving will prepare me to care for the oral health needs of my patients and/or the general public. I will ensure that I follow all OHSA regulations and use the standard of care that has has been put in place by the Texas State Board of Dental Examiners
3.Community Involvement Over the past year I have been involved with several non profit organizations. I volunteered at a local church in Houston, TX. I served food to the people in the community. I interacted with members of the church and some old high school classmates. I volunteered for the Boy Scout's of America. We met at a church in Orange ,TX. A couple of hundred boys ranging from 10-16 years old received different types of Merritt badges. I was responsible for collecting the role call sheet from the classrooms the boys were involved in. I interacted with my fellow dental hygiene class mates. I volunteered at a Head Start Program near my school in Beaumont,TX. I assisted the Registered Dental Hygienist screen which involved screening several hundred Pre-K to 6 year olds for any potential oral health care risk. We provided the children recommendations for the parents. The children received fluoride and a gift bag. I attended my volunteer sites for several hours. I discovered it only takes a small portion of my time to help others. It feels great to give to someone other than myself.
4.Patient Care I will use my my years as a dental assistant and the vast amount of knowledge that I am receiving from LIT to provide my patient's with outstanding dental hygiene care. I will make every effort to ensure the need and concerns of my patients are addressed. I will use the patients exam and x-rays as tools to prepare a care plan that is fit to meet individual needs.
5. Professional Growth and Development I will continue to seek out knowledge as I advance in the dental hygiene profession. I will use the knowledge to help my patients achieve the best oral health possible.
